| Whetton's Store stood just north of the Needham Heights Common, on the site now occupied by the Shell gas station. On the lower floor were the general store and the first Needham Heights Post Office; Whetton, and later his son, were the Postmasters. The second floor was known as Highland Hall, and was used as meeting space for the Sons of Temperance, the Odd Fellows, the Sons of St George (a knitters' fraternal organization) and others, plus a site for dances, concerts and other events. Whetton's Store had the first telephone in Needham, installed circa 1893. |
