| Carter's first mill, also known as the Upper Mill, served as his business office as well as a manufacturing plant. It was located on Highland Avenue beside Needham Heights Square. Carter acquired this building in 1875 from his business partners/brothers-in-law, John and Mark Lee. The mill was torn down in the 1950s, and rebuilt as the corporate headquarters. At its height, the company owned eight manufacturing facilities in the United States. The Carter Company remained family-owned and in their Needham offices until the company was sold in 1990. Their former headquarters now house the Avery Manor assisted living facility. |
